Every January, we’re faced with the same question: ‘how can I stay motivated to workout?’ It’s like a record on repeat… we promise ourselves that we’ll join the gym and even go as far as investing in some new gym wear, but after a matter of weeks we find that our fitness motivation is beginning to slide.

We’re here to remind you, Loungers, that it’s perfectly okay! You should never feel pressured to do something because it’s seen as the ‘done’ thing. Our advice is and always will be ‘be the person YOU want to be, not who society wants you to be.’

However, we know that fitness is an important part of many of our Loungers’ lives and is also a great way to boost your mood and improve your sleep, so we’ve rounded up our top workout motivation tips to help keep you on track. We also caught up with Milly G to shine a light on how she stays motivated and how you can ease yourself into the world of fitness in a way that suits you.

HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED TO WORKOUT

SWITCH THINGS UP

If you’re finding that your fitness motivation is slipping, our advice is to change up your workout regime! So, if you’re sick of the same heavy lifting routine, why not try a HIIT session or a spot of yoga instead? Or if you enjoy running, swap your regular route for a new one to give yourself a change of scenery.

There are lots of ways to keep your workouts feeling fresh and when you find that you’re actually enjoying what you’re doing, it makes it a whole lot easier to stay motivated. Trust us!

REWARD YOURSELF

It’s no secret that rewarding yourself is always at the top of our priority list! Besides, you deserve it!

After each workout, take a few minutes to savour how exercising makes you feel. It’s a well-known fact that exercise can positively impact your wellbeing and we’re here for it. Rewarding yourself with a tasty treat, a pamper session or all new Lounge (sorry, we couldn’t help ourselves) is also another great way to help you maintain your workout motivation.

MAKE IT EXCITING

Whether that means listening to your favourite playlist on repeat or inviting your bestie to tag along, adding an element of fun to your fitness schedule will no doubt help you stay on top of your A-game. Having a friend who you can check in with is always important and will not only help you, but can even help them too! Be each other’s cheerleader and support one another to help you each achieve your goals.

BE PATIENT

It’s likely that from time to time, you’re going to hit a wall and the last thing you’ll want to do is exercise. Remember that this is perfectly normal! It’s important that you’re patient with yourself and acknowledge when your body and mind needs time to reboot and recharge.

After some time away, you’ll feel much more energised and ready to get moving again! Make sure you don’t fall into the trap of setting overly ambitious goals either, as this will only tempt you to give up.

Getting your workout routine on track can seem tricky at first, which is why it’s important that you do things at your own pace. For Milly G, this means being flexible and building a positive relationship with exercise.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WEEK OF WORKOUTS LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?

My workouts will always include some form of weightlifting. I tend to do 3 lower body days, each of which will have 1 of the 3 main compounds, which include hip thrusts, squats and deadlifts. I will also train my upper body twice with one focusing on push movements and the other focusing on pull movements.

I’m not as strict with my workouts as I used to be when I had a bad relationship with exercise. I’m a lot more flexible with it, and if I need more rest days or I can’t fit all my workouts in during the week, then I won’t! Life always comes first.

WHAT ROLE DOES FITNESS PLAY IN YOUR LIFE?

Fitness holds so much value to me. When I had a negative relationship with fitness, I used to abuse working out and exercise daily to ‘punish’ my body. It’s no longer a chore for me now that I have found what amazing things it brings by overlooking the physical aspects of it. It’s a way for me to feel strong, empowered and for me to de-stress, as opposed to making me feel weak, exhausted and stressed.

HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED IN THE GYM AFTER CHRISTMAS?

I work out for so many other reasons beyond the physical side of it which is what helps me stay consistent with it. I don’t think motivation exists, it's more about discipline and finding a form of exercise that you enjoy. That way, you won’t need to rely on motivation, as it becomes something that you want to do and something that has real value to you.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR OUR LOUNGERS WHO ARE NEW TO THE GYM OR FEEL UNEASY ABOUT IT?

Don’t overthink it! Everyone in the gym started as a beginner. People are there to work on themselves, not focus on you. Invest in some nice activewear to boost your confidence, create a good playlist and make a little plan before you head to the gym.

I like writing down my exercises beforehand with alternatives in case the machine or area is unavailable -  that way I know exactly what I’m doing. Finding a workout buddy is also a great way to build your confidence, whilst having a personal trainer is handy for learning what to do and discovering what you like doing.

WHAT ARE YOUR GO TO MEALS FOR TRAINING? WE’D LOVE TO TRY SOME?

I love making poke bowls! I either use rice or quinoa and add some form of protein, such as fish, tofu or mock meat, then add edamame, mango, spinach, cucumber and crispy onions. Drizzle some Sriracha mayo on top and it’s honestly amazing! For something simpler, I love a homemade flatbread wrap using chicken pieces, cucumber, sweet chilli sauce and salad.

My yoghurt pots are also very popular on my Instagram page. They include a whole pot of Alpro yogurt, honey and your choice of toppings. I always go for something crunchy like granola, add some nut butter and maybe some chocolate chunks as well!

Well, we think that sounds truly delish!

Ensuring you get the right amount of nutrition, Loungers, isn’t just an important part of maintaining your fitness motivation, it’s an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle too! This is because your body can feel fatigued if it’s not getting the right food. But that doesn’t mean you can’t treat yourself to something a bit more indulgent too!

Knowing how to motivate yourself to workout may not be the only concern on your mind when it comes to fitness. If you’re struggling with gym anxiety, you’re not alone and we’re here to give you a helping hand.

So, whether you’re new to the gym or want to give your workout a refresh, our tips are designed to help you in a way that suits you.
