It’s time we talked about postpartum bods, girls.

Whether you’re pregnant and struggling with changes to your growing body or you’ve recently welcomed a new addition to your family, it’s no secret that a lot of women struggle with their postpartum body.

What should be a joyful time filled with bliss can often be overshadowed by negative emotions, but don’t worry, you’re not alone. Postpartum body dysmorphia is a very real thing and studies have shown that many women struggle with negative postpartum body image after giving birth - even many years later.

How does a woman’s body change after giving birth?

It’s inevitable that your body will change after giving birth, even whilst pregnant. From changes in body weight to enlarged or sagging breasts, stretch marks, skin changes and wider hips, every woman is bound to experience changes in their body.

However you’re feeling, we’re here to let you know that your postpartum body is beautiful whether it’s carrying a new life, or recently given birth to one. Here’s some tips on how you can love your postpartum body and get back to feeling like you.

1. Give your body some credit

Without sounding biased, women are pretty incredible. If you’re struggling with your post pregnancy body, just think about this: your body has literally grown a new life inside of you. That’s pretty awesome, right?

2. Ignore culture expectations

As women, we’re constantly being bombarded with cultural expectations of how our bodies should look, especially after giving birth. Don’t feel pressured to hit the gym four times a week or invest in the latest tummy tea to ‘lose weight quickly’. Your body has undergone some serious changes over the last 9 months, so you owe it to yourself to take it easy.

3. Remember your body is different, not damaged

The negative emotions a woman may feel about their postpartum body aren’t just surface level. Your moods will change and you might feel restless as a result of changing hormones. Remember, your body isn’t damaged, it’s just experiencing some temporary changes. You’ll be back to feeling like you in no time.

4. Ditch the scales

That’s right, ladies. Scales be gone! Your body will naturally fluctuate in weight during and after pregnancy. Plus, your GP or midwife will weigh you at your postnatal visits. If there is a problem, he/she will tell you.

5. Change your wardrobe

As you come to terms with your postpartum body, you might feel a bit unsure about what to wear. It can be easy to resort to baggy joggers and oversized tees, especially if you’re feeling a little restless, but it’s important to wear clothes that make you feel good! Go for some luxurious loungewear if you’re Lounging around the house, or if you’re taking a stroll, maybe try some maxi dresses and flared trousers.

6. Speak out

If you’re still worried about your postpartum body or you’re just not feeling like yourself, reach out to one of your besties or seek professional help. There is nothing to be ashamed about and there is always someone there to listen, including us.

The bottom line: there is nothing wrong with your postpartum body. Try to do your best to accept and honour your body for what it is. During times like this, focus your energy on your health and wellbeing and the new bundle of joy that you (yes, you) created.

Don’t let postpartum body dysmorphia get the better of you. You are beautiful, now and forever.
