It’s the start of another new year and we all know what that means, right? It’s the chance for a fresh start, to venture outside of your comfort zone and for new and exciting opportunities. We may be the first to say it, Loungers, but something’s telling us that 2022 is going to be BIG!
If you’re looking to dive head first into new experiences, Veganuary could be the perfect way to do so. It’s likely that you’ve already heard of the month-long challenge, but perhaps you’ve never been exactly sure on how to do Veganuary? Well, you’re in luck because that’s exactly why we’re here!
Last year, more than 582,000 people took part in the campaign - the biggest number yet! On top of that, a huge 85% of participants said they’d planned to permanently change their diet by either staying vegan or at least halving their intake of animal products, which just goes to show how popular it is!
But what actually is Veganuary and how can you get involved? We know that giving up the food you love can be a big ask, so we caught up with none other than one of our Lounge Legends, Georgie on her vegan journey.
WHAT IS VEGANUARY?
Veganuary is a non-profit organisation that encourages people worldwide to try a vegan diet for January and beyond as a way of protecting the environment, preventing animal suffering and promoting a healthier lifestyle.
Making more conscious decisions is a vital part of protecting our planet and as a sustainable brand, we’re all for doing anything and everything we can to take care of Mother Nature. Read more about our commitment to sustainability here.
HOW TO DO VEGANUARY
If you’re wanting to join hundreds of thousands of people for 2022, brava, ladies! However, as with the removal of any food group from your diet, going vegan requires careful planning to keep you healthy and well.
The first step to going vegan: take things nice and slowly and give your body enough time to adjust. You may wish to start by eating vegan breakfasts for a week, then adding vegan lunches the following week, and so on.
It’s important that you do things at your own pace and avoid making drastic changes that you don’t feel comfortable with. Veganuary is the perfect month to explore tasty vegan recipes and increase your plant-based diet. Why not try going vegan for 2 or 3 days of the week rather than 7?
REASONS TO GO VEGAN
There are plenty of reasons to go vegan, Loungers. Let us enlighten you with some fun-filled facts…
1. First and foremost, being vegan helps to protect our planet and Mother Nature. Meat production produces harmful amounts of pollution and is in fact one of the biggest contributors of climate change.
2. Being vegan is also the best way to protect our beloved furry friends. Psst…did you know that every vegan saves nearly 200 animals every year, Loungers?
3. Those who go vegan also tend to be healthier and unlike other ‘fad diets’, being vegan will actually give you more energy and you can’t argue with that, can you?
4. As well as being incredibly tasty, being vegan is also a more sustainable way of feeding the entire population, as a plant-based diet requires only a third of the land that is required to support a meat and dairy diet. Mother Nature only deserves the very best, right?
HOW ELSE CAN I GET INVOLVED?
We appreciate that going vegan isn’t for everyone, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still get involved in all the Veganuary fun.
Thanks to the internet, the sky’s the limit. Discover endless delicious vegan recipes and once a week or even once a month, cook a tasty vegan meal for yourself and a friend. Why not take things up a level by doing a Come Dine With Me style cook-off between you and your besties? May the best Lounger win!
Or even simpler than that, the next time you pick up your caramel latte or hot chocolate, ask for a non-dairy milk, like Soya or Oat. They’re totally delicious and much better for the environment.
GEORGIE SWALLOW ON VEGANUARY
WHAT DOES VEGANUARY MEAN TO YOU?
It's because of Veganuary that I became vegan, so it means a lot to me that's for sure! January last year, I made the decision to take part in Veganuary and see if I could make it through the month. I'd always wanted to be vegan, but Veganuary gave me the push and time frame I needed to commit to it. By the end of the month, I had found a new way of life and I loved it.
WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO VEGAN MEAL?
Mixed bean chilli absolutely has to be my go-to vegan meal. It is unbelievably simple, it doesn't cost a lot and it’s packed with goodness! It's also a great meal when you either have lots of left-over veggies, as you can pack them all in, or when you don't have much, as you can use all the beans in your cupboard! It’s a win win!
WHAT TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE WHO ARE LOOKING TO GO VEGAN?
Try not to overwhelm yourself at the beginning by buying too many cook books or investing in a million weird and wonderful ingredients. I would recommend downloading the Deliciously Ella recipe app 'Feel Better', as her recipes are simple and delish.
While Veganuary is a great way to challenge yourself and try new things, it’s not the only way you can be more conscious and help protect our planet. It’s true! Other aspects of your lifestyle, such as what you buy, can have an impact too.
